Abstract

This article aims to analyzes two central characters of the following tales of Machado de Assis: “O habilidoso” and “O machete”. The two stories revolve around the central theme of ars and ingenium quoted by the roman poet Horace, but it goes beyond that, as readers are taken into the perspective of tragic and sublime - concepts of the romanticism era. It could be said that lacking inner motivations, João Maria e Inácio Ramos, pursue in the outer world forces to remain themselves in this artistic but limited world of celebrities.
